Ever wondered what became of the first man to be involved with Catherine Howard, her music teacher Henry Manox (Mannox)?
While much is known about Catherine’s tragic end and the fates of Francis Dereham and Thomas Culpeper, Manox’s story is often overlooked.
In this video, I uncover the intriguing details of his relationship with the young queen, his attempts to cause trouble for her, and his ultimate fate during the tumultuous events of 1541.
Discover how Manox managed to escape the brutal consequences that others faced…
I enjoyed this video as have often wondered what happened to Henry Manox, or Manock however which way it is spelt, no doubt he must have been engaged whilst he enjoyed the meetings with Catherine as he appears to have married soon after, and he must have suffered his wife’s ire for that, he really was extremely lucky in that he never went to court to pursue his old sweetheart, it is very likely that he did not feel much more than a mild fancy for her unlike Dereham, who it seems was rather obsessed, there is her jealousy of Dereham but men are like that, he did not like to think that he had succeeded whereas Manox had not, possibly his ego was just dented when she ended it, really men have not changed much over the centuries they all like to brag when young, even when there maybe not much to brag about, but Catherine really by allowing him liberties with her body was behaving like a tavern girl, when she ended her affair with Dereham he of course could not let it go he must have been so annoyed that he had lost such a glittering prize in Catherine Howard, that he ended up in court in her employ and became a nuisance boasting about her and once he nearly ended up in a fight with one of Catherine’s menservants, but what hid happen to Manox, since he disappears from the records he probably did just settle down to a quiet life with his wife and may have had children, what did he feel when the queen died? He must have felt some measure of sympathy for her but relived he had not shared her fate, he may have descendants living amongst us today, the surname however seems to be quite rare, two of the men involved with Catherine died including herself and left a betrayed and bereft king, Manox could well have lived to old age, but it is possible like the king, that he ever forgot the winsome but fatal charms of Catherine Howard.
