Hi, I am a thirteen year old history student, and I am a huge admirer of Queen Anne Boleyn. I find this website very informative.
Today, a thought passed through my head that maybe Henry VIII in reality loved Mary Boleyn more than he actually loved Anne. I am basing this on the fact that Henry first opted for Mary (of course since Mary was available to the King before Anne). Also, since Henry was desperately in need for a younger, more fertile wife to carry out his duty of producing an heir, he wouldn’t have been able to take Mary as his wife, since Mary was already married at the time, to William Carey.
And again, since Mary was simply Henry’s mistress, I do not think that she would have been accepted as Henry’s wife either way, and her child Henry Carey, who was quite possibly fathered by Henry would have been illegitimate. So wouldn’t that have made Anne the other available option he had, once she returned to England from France? Anne was not tied with any marriages, and she was quite possibly younger than Mary, on grounds that Mary was wedded first? Henry would have had to go for Anne after that.
