Hello,Claire !I have two questions.1.Can you tell me what stones were mostly on Anne Boleyn’s jewelery other than pearl ?2.What was Mary I’s relationship like with Elizabeth I?Did Mary I hated her?
On p251 of "The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn", in the chapter "Life at Court", Eric Ives writes of how Cornelius Hayes' (the royal jeweller) bill in May 1532 include three dozen items of jewellery for "Mistress Anne" which included a Catherine wheel of gold set with 13 diamonds. After her death, Ives writes that a desk of her belongings was inventoried and this included a diamond ring with a "HA" cipher. Ives also talks about how Anne has been pictured with her B necklace pearl choker and a necklace of rubies and pearls, and that she owned a sapphire which was put on the cover of a gold bowl.
Ives also writes of how Anne's costumes were enhanced with jewels: "nineteen diamonds set in trueloves of gold...twenty-one rubies and twenty-one diamonds set in gold roses and hearts."
So, pearls, diamonds, rubies and sapphires!
As for Mary I's relationship with Elizabeth I, I think they got on fine as children but that Elizabeth became a problem when Mary became Queen because of her claim to the throne, her Protestant faith and the way that she could be used as a figure-head for rebellions, as in the case of Wyatt's Revolt. I don't think that Mary hated her, I think she was wary of her.
