We just don't know, unfortunately, as we have no details, We don't even know that it was an affair, rather than just a one night stand. It is thought that it began in 1522, when the King rode out to the traditional shrovetide joust with the motto “Elle mon Coeur a navera”, she has wounded my heart. Some historians believe that the grants given to William Carey, Mary's husband, between 1522 and 1526 may have been to keep him happy, payments for the use of his wife, but then Carey was related to the King and was a favourite so he may well have been rewarded with these grants anyway. Henry was generous in rewarding those who served him so I don't think we can read too much into these grants.
