On the 9th August 1588 (old calendar) Elizabeth I, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, appeared before her troops at Tilbury Fort, where they had gathered to defend England from the Spanish Armada. According to tradition, the Queen appeared in armour and gave a rousing speech.
