  1. My god, as you say Claire, even their Christmas games were dangerous, this so fascinating learning about the games they played, mind you in the age of candlelight there must have been fewer accidents than in our modern world, as they was used to handling such a dangerous substance, I recall when Hampton Court was set ablaze by some old soul who nodded of in her grace and favour apartment, leaving her candle lit, old folk should not be allowed to have candles as they are unreliable like young children, after that which took a lot of money to repair the grand old palace and sadly the poor lady died, I believe they confiscated candles, battery ones are much safer, back to the Tudor period, imagine trying to retrieve the goodies out of a flaming bowl, what about the men with their long curling beards and the ladies with their wide hanging sleeves? It must have been the danger that added that touch of spice the thrill of it, to the game, but I bet many a poor soul had his/her fingers singed, and worse.
