Did Elizabeth I Have a Secret Child with Robert Dudley?

On this day in Tudor history, 30th October 1566, Queen Elizabeth I’s former tutor, Roger Ascham, wrote a letter to his queen. It was a long, heartfelt letter of praise and moral guidance, but centuries later, it would be twisted into something sensational – supposed proof that Elizabeth had a secret child with Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and that child was the famous statesman and philosopher Francis Bacon.

But what did Ascham actually write?
And how did a pious letter about ruling, learning, and virtue become ‘evidence’ for a royal scandal?…

  1. Ascham also tutored the ill fated Lady Jane Grey, another brilliant scholar and it was said she was the one who imparted to him the miserable life she had with her parents , the nips and slaps, the harsh rebukes she suffered in her daily life, it makes me wonder if that was the reason he wrote his book on Tudor parenting, was it a tribute to his dead tragic pupil? Certainly Tudor noble and royal parents were very harsh, but their offspring had to be prepared for life at court, they were the children of grand ancient and noble families, it was imperative they received the best education and that included along with learning the classics, languages and mathematics, strict table manners deportment etc, but Aschams view that love should be a big part of it is endearing, and that he adored both Jane Grey and Elizabeth who had lessons together whilst they were in Katherine Parr’s household, is in no doubt, Aschams letter he wrote to Elizabeth when she was Queen is proof of his devotion, it was a devotional letter that is all, but people read into it what they will, there has always been speculation about the virgin queen and her mysterious sex life, and iv heard the tale of Francis Bacon before and was he Elizabeth and Leicesters secret son, but we know as Queen she was always in the company of her women and it was impossible for her to conduct a love affair let alone give birth in private, without anyone knowing, Elizabeth had apartments next to his where her court resided which did lead to gossip, but they probably did nothing more than play cards and sup till the early hours, we will never know if their relationship was platonic or sexual, his wives mysterious death was made out to be a plot to kill her so Dudley was free to marry the queen, she did not but it was a scandal which shook England and Europe at the time, ever aware of her shaky throne beneath her, the result of her fathers marriage to her mother, which was never seen as legal rendering her a bastard in in the eyes of the pope and her Catholic subjects, she dared do nothing that would risk her toppling from her princely pinnacle, it had been a long tumultuous journey to her throne and at one time she had been under suspicion of treason, and imprisoned in the Tower, she was cautious and wary after surviving Thomas Seymour’s execution and her sisters five turbulent years reign, where she had learnt to keep her head down in order to survive. No Elizabeth the virgin queen never had any children, and no husband, she was wedded to her country and her subjects were her children, as she was fond of reminding them, there was a rumour when as a young girl she had become pregnant by Seymour her stepfather and had given birth in secret in a house in the country, a midwife had been taken there blindfolded and delivered the child, the mother was young and fair so she is alleged to have said, but it was just gossip possibly spread by Seymour’s enemies and he had made quite a few!
