Why did the Tudors series change Henry's fav sister Mary's name to Margaret??? What possible point could there be in doing this? Margaret the elder sister was married off the the King of Scott's while Mary, the younger, married of to the elderly King of France- then skipped off with Charles Brandon after thatKing's death… In the series Mary is called Margaret, married off to someone else entirely, kills him then skips off with Brandon.

Is anyone else as confused/annoyed as I? Or should I get out more?!Wink

I think they merged the two sisters together, I may be wrong though.

In my opinon though, by doing that they left out some good future shows, if they were to go back and do a series on the sisters lives or Mary, as they cant now use both Mary and Margaret.

I assumed that they'd decided that the audience couldn't cope with there being another Mary around (as well as Princess Mary and Mary Boleyn), which is just insulting to the viewers if you ask me!

Merging the two sisters was annoying, especially since there was no logical reason to do so. But, I agree with Beth. I guess the producers, etc. felt the audience could not follow the storylines of two Marys, which is utterly ridiculous. I guess in the world of The Tudors, Mary Queen of Scots and Lady Jane Grey never happen. Sad really. Like BoleynBlue mentioned, a great potential for future programming was missed. I was hoping that the series would've continued with Edward, Mary, etc. I wanted to see their lives played on on screen, since it has not been done to any extent.

I was actually very diaspointed that there was only one sister and not two and that Mary was the character but was named Margaret. I love the Tudors don't get me wrong but i think the show may have been a little juicier and dramatic with the two sisters and would've had more storylines.

Incredibly insulting, IMHO.

I think most people can follow a storyline as complex as the true Tudor story without losing any of the minor characters.

I absolutely agree with everyone! I too was hoping the Tudor's would be about The Tudors and not finish with Henry's death.. The series was so captivating it is a real shame to think they may not continue it…

I like the explanation of the two sisters being merged together- it makes sense as there was no mention of the real Margaret (I just thought they got the name wrong and forgot about the other sister entirely!)… But really, what a missed opportunity for story lines!

Perhaps we could hold someone to ransom so there is more of the series, including Edward, Mary and Elizabeth…

I would imagine that if they ever did decide to cover the lives of Mary Queen of Scots and Lady Jane Grey they would just gloss over their family history!

I found this to be one of the most outlandish inaccuracies in the show. Margaret, the real one, was married and in Scotland.  A mere mention of her would have been nice. Why they had to name Mary, Margaret, was beyond me.  They also had her married to the King of Portugal.  Didn't understand that either.  And of course they had her committing murder. If they thought the audience would be confused, which btw is insulting to me, they could have called her Mary Rose and the other one Mary or Mary Tudor.

My theory is that they were selling this to an audience they thought wouldn't know squat about the Tudors; and they decided to dumb down.

I know! That bugs me too. I guess they had her marry the King of Portugal because they had already introduced Francis as King of France. I can kind of understand that, from the producers point of view they probably had to tweak the timeline to make sure that they had enough good material to fill each episode. I don't personally agree with it, and as a history fan I would have preferred them not to do it, but from the perspective of making a show for a wider audience I can sort of understand why.

And as for the murder, I suppose it's just more dramatic! Every time I watch it I do tend to wonder why the characters aren't more bothered about it though. You'd think Charles Brandon and Henry would be a little more shocked at their loved one's actions!

She didn't tell them what she had done, did she?  Nor forensic scientists back then.

You don't see her tell anyone, but Charles Brandon makes a few comments that implied that he knew. That's how I read it anyway. I could be way off the mark!

I agree Beth, I think it was the episode before which showed Francis as King of France, so they couldn't then have her marry Louis King of France.

From an entertainment point of view I think they missed out on a lot, and from a history/factual POV they messed up entirely.

If they ever do go back and do the story of Mary Queen of Scots, Margaret will then have to appear unless they gloss over her again.

I seem to remember them talking back on the ship to go back to England. Marygret asks Brandon, “Do you think they suspected anything?”, and he replies, “Yes! Did you see the way they were all looking at you? His son looked very happy, though.”

Hmmm…I do not remember that scene with Charles at all.  I remember the one when they were on their way to Portugal during a storm and Margaret made her maids leave so she could be alone with Charles.  Yep, I remember that scene.  Selective memory, my husband calls it…LOL

To Sharon. The scene is in the episode after Margaret kills the King and they're (Brandon & her) are laying down in a bed. It's when he askes her to marry him. If thats any help…

Yes, that's the one! I was mostly sure I hadn't made it up…lol. By the way, I love Marygret!

I do, too, but can't take credit for it. I saw it on another message board I post on about TV, when we were nitpicking the series every week. Which started with the first scene of the first episode. “His uncle?!? He didm't have a flippin' uncle! Not alive when he was king, anyway.” Ahh, that was a fun 4 years…

Yes I watched that episode last night, and that was exactly what was said.
