Hever Castle is worth a visit I’ve not been up there myself yet (despite only being about an hours drive away from my home) but Dinosaur(husband) has, and he said it’s beautiful.. Rochester Castle is literely five minutes drive from my home and I have a very soft spot for it, as I got married within it’s grounds..
Upnor Castle is also worth a visit, Elizabeth 1st stayed there during the Armada hassle, and it was from there she rode on to Tilbury (just outside Gravesend) to address the troops. Gravesend is of course also where Pocahontas is buried..

I just finished my tour of Rochester Castle via Google Map. Just “drove” all around Castle Hill and ended up on College Yard in front of a very beautiful old stone “church” I was just wondering what church it is and if it has any segnificance to the Boleyn Family?

Though I’ve “toured” lots of England the last few years, I’d never come across this section, very lovely , what with all the walkways, park benches, etc.

I LOVE GOOGLE MAP touring.Cool

I “drove” north on Esplanade along the river with the old stone wall with the indented arches with the benches in them. When I go to Castle Hill, I turned right up the hill and made my way around the castle , past the “church” and around to Bakers Walk, and BAMB! there I was at the base of the castle! What a surprise! Then I drove on around Bakers Walk and came out back on Esplanade in fron of the river. Boy, can you ever get lost with all the crooks and turns, with the high stone walls, and all. But very enjoyable!

One good thing about Google Map tours, if you get lost, you can always turn around and drive back and start over, and THE TRAFFIC ALL STANDS STILL FOR YOU.Wink

Rochester Cathedral is just below the castle, it’s wonderful, the architchtral blows me away it’s beautiful. The Castle itself is steeped in history, King John laid siege to it and actually destroyed part of the walls to actually get inside the castle, using a revolutionally new technic at the time of digging down under the foundations of the castle which was mainly wood at that time, and burning pigs to weaken that corner so that it would fall down. That was the only time that John showed any type of strength. John is also credited with destroying the only bridge in and out of the castle. After luring the soliders out of the castle he destroyed the bridge. King John is buried in Worcester Cathedral Ahh I know it so well as I was brought up around Malvern on the edge of the Herefordshire/Worcestershire Border.

Yes, love that idea. I never would have thought of that. Thanks, Larry. I’m going for a drive!

Glad to hear you guys enjoy using G Map for touring. Let me know of other interesting places of historical significance that I can tour.

If you guys really want to have some FUN driving around; go to G+ and start a Hang Out, get some of yours friends to join, and then call up G Map and Share Screen with them, then you can TOUR around and everyone can see the same views and everyone can discuss with audio, in real time what they are seeing. Sooooooo “KOOL”!
