As I've never been there, I may head there next week. Can anyone give me any places to visit inside? Obviously the chapel. I hear you need to take a tour to see that though.

I have seen theim gentill, tame, and meke, that nowe are wyld, and do not remembre…

The chapel, definitely, Peter ad St. Vincula (St. Peter-in-chains). For some reason when I was there, they weren't letting you in but I begged and begged saying how much I loved Anne Boleyn and finally the yeoman relented and let me in 🙂 Not ashamed to say I wept. Obviously go see the Tower Green, and if you look up you can see the window of the tower where Anne was kept hostage before her execution. I think Claire posted about this, so see her post if you want to know details, but when I was there at the Tower there was a reenactment of Anne's trial, and other cool things. Go see Beauchamp Tower, where the Dudleys (including our Elizabeth's Robin) were imprisoned. There are lots of engravings on the wall, some presumable from the Dudleys. I would also recommend the tower where the Two Princes disappeared, sorry, I forget what it's called, and also if they are there (they were when I went) the Crown Jewels. Beyond that, I'd say see the ravens! Hope this helps.

From July the Tower has actually made it so that you can enter the chapel without being on a Yeoman Warder's tour, they'e just got a Yeoman Warder at the entrance to answer questions and to make sure that no-one takes photos.

I would go on a Yeoman Warder's tour if you can because the Yeoman Warders are brilliant – slightly inaccurate with their information, but real characters.

Go and stand on the gravelled parade ground between the White Tower and the Waterloo Block, just in front of the clock, and you wll be standing pretty much on the spot where the likes of Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey were executed. As far as being able to see where Anne was imprisoned, she was not imprisoned in the Queen's House, this block was not buillt until after her death, but if you go and stand near the Wardrobe Tower and the Lanthorn Tower, that's where the Royal Palace used to stand and that's where Anne stayed before her coronation and execution. See my post at /anne-boleyn-and-the-tower-of-london/4817/ which includes a plan showing where the Royal Palace used to stand. There's a bigger plan at

/resources/anne-boleyn-places/the-tower-of-london-in-annes-life/

Anyway, make sure you see:-

  • The Chapel
  • The White Tower
  • The execution spot on the parade ground
  • The Beauchamp Tower – for the prisoners' grafitti
  • The Medieval Palace in the Wakefield and St Thomas Towers
  • Crown jewels
  • The scaffold site on Tower Hill, out of the Tower grounds – There are memorial plaques there to the likes of Thomas More, Bishop Fisher etc.

It is well worth buying a guide book too.

Awesome information, thanks a lot 😀

I had a little trip to Windsor Castle today (considering I live so close to it and have never been inside) and got to view originals by Hans Holbein and sketches by Leonardo Da Vinci and also to visit the graves of Henry, Jane and Charles Brandon too (along with Charles I, Edward IV etc) 🙂

I hope the info is useful, James. The shop is really good at the Tower too, ought to have put that on the list!

I think we always take things for granted that are on our doorstep. I grew up just a few miles from Stratford-upon-Avon and took for granted the RSC and Shakespeare's birthplace. Wow, sounds like you had a great time at Windsor.

I wish  could go on an Anne Boleyn tour so badly, but I am all the way back in the states–but one day I'll be there pinky swear!

So, I went to the Tower today…It was so epic!

You know, I felt my eyes were completely fixed to a certain spot on the floor to the left of the altar in St Peter Ad Vincula Wink

How was it, James? The Tower is so wonderful, I could spend my entire life there and never ever get bored!

As I said, it was epic! Some really beautiful places there and of course the history! Some places were a bit too “attraction” for my liking (like they were aimed at entertaining children), but I just looked past that and drank in the history. The princes, Anne, Catherine, everything! The Chapel is beautiful too; it's a shame we couldn't take photos inside it. I took photos of most other places though…let's see if this works

That's the album to which I uploaded the photos on my facebook.
The Tower gave me inspiration too 😀

Thanks for the pictures, they're great. I agree, the Tower is fantastic. I would say it's the number 1 place to go in England…

As a person who has not been to England, and has to live vicariously through those who do, I want to thank you for the pictures.

They are lovely.

Haha you’re welcome! I was surprised at how well I’d read up on the Tower before I went there because I knew quite a lot about it. It wasn’t until I was there I could put all the little pieces of information I knew into place. My friend, who was with me, took more photos. You might be able to see them on my profile (not sure what my privacy settings are; or, alternatively, add me and you should be able to see them some way or another)
