Does anyone know what qualifications are needed to be a costumed interpreter?

When I went to Hampton Court Palace I was really impressed by the costumed interpreters at the palace. I was thinking how I would love to do this as I am passionate about History but also because I attended a weekend theatre group for nine years and really enjoyed it, I only gave it up three years ago as it was only for 6-18 year olds…. I got too old Frown

I don't however have any professional drama qualifications and was wondering if this would be necessary. I am starting a degree in History this year but don't know if that would be good enough on it's own. I want to try and join a drama group at uni. I actually want to work in heritage or PR, so it's not like it was part of my original career plan but I guess I'm just intrigued whether I would stand a chance of doing it?

I found the website of the reenactment group that provides interpreters for Hampton Court and on the careers page it says that most reenactor's are educated to degree level and have a passion for history and the ability to present themselves in front of the public. It mentions drama skills but still does not make clear whether qualifications are needed in this area.

I'm not sure. I know one costumed guide there who has a degree in history and was trained as a costumed guide by HCP, she hasn't mentioned any formal drama training. I would contact HCP and ask them, they'll be able to answer all your questions.

I just need to share a funny story about this thread. When I read the title, want to know what I thought it was about? I thought it was a question about what qualifications are needed to be an expert in analysing the clothes of a set period or person and deducing what type of person they were or secret messages in the clothes in the portrait. You know interpreting the person's costume. What an idiot I am.

Don't worry Bill1978, I think that is a very easy mistake to make, after all, there are experts in historical clothing. To be honest I should have wrote costumed guide or reenact-or, that would have been less confusing Laugh

Hi Claire-Louise,

That's actually a very good idea!! I too have always been fascinated by the costumed interpreters. If you find any information, would you mind telling me about it? You can PM me if that's easiest.

Thank you!!!
