A bit of fun for film fans, what are the best historical films you've ever seen? They don't have to be good, but you like them for your own reasons, they also don't have to be true, just cover a period in history (so, at a pinch, pretty well anything goes). As Easter has just passed I thought 13 would be a good number for a maximum, although any number up to that is fine. Let's see how many duplicates appear on the lists. My 13 (and I had to leave a good few out!) in date order are:

Ben-Hur (1959)

Spartacus (1960)

Zulu (1964)

Khartoum (1966)

Anne Of The Thousand Days (1969)

Cross Of Iron (1977)

Sophie's Choice (1982)

Out Of Africa (1985)

The English Patient (1996)

Elizabeth (1998)

Gladiator (2000)

Kingdom Of Heaven (2005)

The Reader (2008)

Hmmm…. this is a toughie. The list is off the top of my head (not always a good idea).

Anne of the Thousand Days (1969)

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

The Duchess (2008)

Elizabeth (1998)

Atonement (2007)

Ever After (1998)

Mary Queen of Scots (1971)

I'm sure there are more, but that's all for now.

Lady Jane

Russian Ark (covers a whole range of periods of Russian history)

Gladiator

It's amazing how many of us think of WWII as history. I grew up with relatives who had fought in either WWI and WWII, I used to listen to them talk about thier experiences.

It's always bunnies.

^ That's so true, Anyanka.  The last two films I listed, 24 Hour Party People and Control are both set in the Manchester music scene of the '70's and '80's, which while I was alive at the time, I consider history!  Gosh I'm old, now that I think about it…. Laugh

But I suppose it depends on how long ago something happened for it to be considered history?

Yes, Stephanie, this is history as the Magdalene “Laundries” are very much a part of Irish history, institutions that should have been abolished long before they were (in my opinion). A good, thought provoking film.

Same here.  I grew up in the 60's and 70's and that is considered history now. **sigh** It seems like it was only yesterday.
