I've recently read somewhere that Anne used to vomit between courses during meals. However, the place I read this did contain some other highly suspect 'facts', so I'm wondering if someone here can clarify this for me!

I have seen theim gentill, tame, and meke, that nowe are wyld, and do not remembre…

I've read this about Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon, who some have speculated had an eating disorder, but never about Anne.

I read this point once in the book whose name I cannot recall, but I took it with a grain of salt, and assumed it was more of Annr Boleyn mythology than truth. Having said that, I have read in some historical books that Anne did not eat a lot (much like her daughter). Again, I cannot confirm that as true. Anne was known to be quite thin, which could have been natural. She did love dancing, riding and hunting, so she was physically active.

I know in Giles Tremlett book on Catherine of Aragon that he makes some points about her potential eating disorder. She was known to fast frequenlty, etc.

I've not heard that in regards to Anne but have read of KOAs eating habits had others concerned for her health, especially when younger. Do tell us if you remember the source for that theory – it sounds intriguing even if it is highly suspect!

Hello, DOB and Bella, I have to admit failure in my search for any reference to Anne and eating disorders, I couldn't find any reference to this, or a book with this in, anywhere. Someone with more skill than I may however be able to find this source (Failure!)Cry

I did however stumble across an interesting article regarding Monarchs about to meet their end and the comfort they received from having their pet dogs around them (Anne, Mary Queen of Scots, Victoria etc), but that sounds like another topic for me to start up!

Happy Easter to you both.Smile

That's interesting. I was inclined not to believe it at all (it was a website of 150 'facts' about historical royal figures) as the site contained a lot of information which was suspect/which I knew was untrue. However, this was one I wasn't sure about. When I looked it up, it seems all I could find were forum posts like mine asking if it were indeed true! I can see perhaps where it may have come from at least now…

The book that I read which contained the 'Anne Boleyn throwing up…” was Matt Richardson's The Royal Book of Lists: an irreverent romp through royal history from Alfred the Great to Prince William. I took his “facts” as questionable. Some fun things, but not a serious study of royal history.

I found this article too, when I was researching pets in the Tudor times, I think it was on psychology today, it was really quite interesting.

Hey guys.  I wonder if the erroneous information came from the report of Anne's coronation feast, during which ladies were assigned to hold a napkin up to the queen when “she wished to spit or do otherwise.”  Perhaps Richardson took “do otherwise” to mean to purge herself?
