I was watching 'Lady Jane' starring Helen Bonham Carter (Spelling?) and i really liked it. But i have a question that i can only trust the people here to answer, my fellow history lovers. (This is of course for people who have seen the movie and know alot about Jane.)

Question: Was Guilford and Jane's romance really like that? Or did the movie make that part up to make it a more romantic movie? I even found myself smiling and saying 'awww' to some of the romantic scenes.

I tried looking it up on the internet but nothing…maybe my google sucks.

I really wish the romantic love thing wasn't made up cause i'll be thoroughly bummed out. Frown

Sorry…. but it was pretty much made up.  In most versions their relationship is often described as one of mutual loathing but I don't think that's quite accurate either.  Theirs was an arranged marriage and they'd only been married a couple of months before events overtook them so I kind of see them as more never really getting to know each other.  It's true that Jane would not have Guildford crowned as king (a strong independant streak?  Wink) and that he went and whined to his mother – who was not at all happy!  Yet on the other hand, Guildford asked to see Jane before they were executed but she refused on the grounds that as they were soon to be together in heaven there was not much point.  Which I kind of think is a little harsh….

Jane did though sob out his name though as the cart carrying his body went past the window she was looking out of.  And she always signed herself 'Jane Dudley' so perhaps her marriage wasn't quite as odious to her as most people seem to think, if not quite the love-match as portryed in Lady Jane.

But don't let that interfere with your enjoyment of the movie; I like it myself!

Like most noble marriages of the time, it was a political allience. Neither party had a real choice about the matter. Some arranged marriages did end up with the couple growing to love each other. And it is possible that they knew each other from being close to Edward.

I understand it was an arranged marriage, almost every marriage back then was. And they portrayed that in the film then the couple started liking each other and it was so cute to watch. Especially after they had slept together and they went out on the lake together and chased each other. Man! Why can't anything be true!!!! : )
