Which author has done the best job of capturing the real Anne in your opinion? Which author has done the same for Henry? Why? What was it about them?

For me, it was Jean Plaidy in “Murder Most Royal” for both of them. Although Anne wasn't perfectly as I imagine her, it was the closest to “my” Anne. Plaidy describes Anne as a child, seen through the eyes of her governess:-

“She would play to win; she would have her will. Quick to anger, she was ever ready to speak her mind, reckless of punishment; she was strong-willed as a boy, adventurous as a boy…No, no one could say she was perfect; she was just herself, and of all the Boleyn children Simonette loved her best.”

and later in the novel she taps into Henry's psyche:-

“He had thought that when Anne became his Queen he would know complete happiness; she had been that for five months, and instead of his happiness growing it had gradually diminished. The King still desired Anne, but he was no longer in love with her; which meant that he had lost that tenderness for her which had dominated him for six years…The stalking of Anne was finished; she had managed to make it arduous; she had made him believe that the end of the hunt was not her surrender, but her place beside him on the throne; together they had stalked a crown for Anne: now it was hers, and they were both exhausted with the effort.”

Anyway, I think Plaidy managed to really get into both characters.

I agree Claire!  I haven't read Catherine Howard's story by Plaidy yet, but I have read “The Lady in the Tower,” and I love her take on both Anne and Henry.  I also like Robin Maxwell's portrayals.
