Would you say a really nice/interesting book cover inspires you to select a book?

I must say it does me!, I'm such a sucker for a really gorgeous or interesting cover on a book BUT the thing that REALLY gets me annoyed is when you have a great book and the cover is illustrated completely wrong. What I mean is I have picked up countless history books and the clothing or hairstyle is of a completely different era to what century the book is set in, hope everyone knows where I'm coming from on this.

A couple of examples say a book set around the time of Henry VII and on the front is a woman with an 18th Century dress on…..yes I've actually come across this before and recently I've read a WW2 book and on the cover was a woman with a 1960's hairstyle, lol! Seriously it so annoys me Yell

Beheaded women make me mad. Esp when the lady in question wasn't beheaded, the cover of My Lady of Cleves by Margaret Campbell Barnes is an example. It's Holbien's portrait from her mouth down….The Tudor Rose by the same author is from the chin down….shudder!

It's always bunnies.

I've seen this book and I know what you mean, so annoying! You feel like saying “Get your facts straight!!!”

Here’s one…Alison Weir's book, “Mary Boleyn,” has Queen Claude of France on the cover. She believes the portraits which we associate with Mary are not her at all.   Okay, it’s a theory.  But it was weird to see Queen Claude on the cover of a book about Mary Boleyn.

I agree with Anyanka. The beheaded woman seems to be a popular cover for books. It's espcially creepy when the cover shows an actual portrait of an historical figure.

I've noticed that most historical fiction novels never show the face of the model. So, it's not the real person, but it seems to support the notion of faceless women in history. The complete person seems devoid. I did notice on a cover of Elizabeth Chadwick's novel To Defy a King, the model looks right into the camera. It was a refreshing take, and a great novel, too.

Beheaded women annoy me too!  And I completely agree with you Sharon about Mary Boleyn – to put someone else entirely on the cover of a historical biography is just plain wrong Yell  Having said that, I do like that cover LOL!

One book that commits both those crimes is Julia Foxs' Jane Boleyn.  It bizarrely has a picture of a headless Jane Seymour on the cover…

Sometimes i do pick a book purely on what the cover looks like and i've picked some pretty good ones that way but lately i either read the back or read a page or two to see if it's actually interesting to me and will keep my attention. Although i don't like PG books that much especially TOBG…i do find her books are able to keep my attention. She's a good writer but everything about her irrates me. Pffft….setting herself up to be a historian, sorry honey you majored in fiction.

Has anyone noticed how they seem to recycle the pictures on for some book covers too?  Philippa Gregorys’ The Other Boleyn Girl and Leanda de Lisles’ The Sisters Who Would Be Queen obviously used the same model wearing the same dress at what I presume was the same photo shoot!

Two things they often do on romance books. Recycle pictures, and naked male torsos. Beheaded.

I have always wondered at the uproar there would be if a romance book featured a beheaded naked female torso. I suppose we should be thankful they're usually clothed.

Olga, once again you have a GREAT point! I don't read romance novels, so all this input is educational to me. I have been in the romance sections of bookstores, and Olga is right about this! LOL! WilesWalesLaughLaughLaugh

Fantasy books can be bad with regard to scantily clad women, because nothing says bad-ass Amazon warrior like a chain mail bikini.

Heads, though are generally visible…..littered on the ground.

I sell a lot of them Wiley. There is one or two authors I read, Meljena's Brook last steampunk novel, naked male torso, beheaded.I have to admit I was too embarrassed to take it to work to read Laugh I know there's an American company who markets fabric book covers for romance books, mostly for that reason.

Anyanka, 1970's sci-fi books, love those covers. They crack me up, I have seen some beauties. Lusty wenches with giant breasts and swords. The Red Sonya ones in particular.
