I was scouting the message boards on the Anne of the Thousand Days page at IMDB and came across this section from Hal Wallis' autobiography that someone had posted up. It amused me so I thought I'd share it 🙂 Certainly gives some insight into the famous Tower scene!
“Burton and Bujold (whom Burton nicknamed “Gin”) got along famously – perhaps a little too well in the eyes of Burton's wife. [Elizabeth] Taylor was absent during much of shoot but, after hearing rumors of her husband's romantic interest in his co-star, she decided to visit the set. She arrived on the day the final scene of the film was shot- a crucial scene in which Henry confronts Anne in the Tower of London. Upon hearing of Taylor's arrival, Bujold “was fighting mad,” according to Wallis. “She turned to Jarrott and me and said, “I'm going to give that b*tch an acting lesson she'll never forget!” then took her position in front of the camera. What seemed a misfortune suddenly turned into an advantage. Genevieve flung herself into the scene with a display of acting skill I have seldom seen equaled in my career. Then she stormed off the set. Soon after filming finished, we had an end-of-the-picture party. The two actresses held court at opposite ends of the room. Richard Burton very pointedly never left Elizabeth's side.”

In the scene, where there is a court masquerade and Katherine prays alone,a couple comes in giggling…The woman behind the mask is Elizabeth Taylor…I couldn't find the exact picture but here she is in costume (wearing the famous La Peregrina, owned by Mary I!)..When Burton first take on the project,Elizabeth had expressed her desire to play Anne Boleyn but the director felt that since the script gave in the begining Anne as an 18 year old girl, that they should find a more age appropriate actress

LMAO…That type of warfare was so typical of Elizabeth's and Richard's relationship. I just watched this a few weeks ago and missed ET. Guess I'll have to watch it again. That scene was very powerful. Apparently, the disagreement gave us an excellent performance from Bujold.

She was a beauty, but not right to play Anne. Too…ok not proportioned as Anne was.

Thanks. I haven't seen the movie on the tv for several months as the DVD player isn't hooked up ATM. I watched it on my pc and it's not the same….
It's always bunnies.

I think Elizabeth Taylor would have made a rather good Anne when she was younger – she definitely had the eyes! But I agree with you Sharon, perhaps she was a little to voluptuous physically
I'm glad they went with Genevieve Bujold though – as La Belle Creole says, her Anne is sublime! Still it's quite funny to think of Elizabeth Taylor on set in a pearl that once belonged to Mary Tudor – wonder what Anne would have to say about that?!!!!

Ah brilliant! That was going to be my next question! I'll have to watch it again now.
I'm glad Bujold was cast though, Elizabeth Taylor is all wrong! And she looks too 20th century in my opinion! Look at those eyebrows!

True, Claire 🙂 That's hilarious, and I can kind of see Elizabeth Taylor and Genevieve Bujold…but I actually think Elizabeth Taylor has something about her which would make her a good Anne. Too voluptuous, but her allure and looks…Perhaps too outright beautiful though.
