Just finished the book and was facinated by it. The 'What-if..?' of the Seymour affair was really good and leaves you thinking.

Of course there are the historical inaccuracies, but overall I think a very good book.

So what did everyone else who's read it think? Smile

I read it a while ago and really liked it !!!  One of my favourite books about Elizabeths early life.

I read this a while ago.  I enjoyed it, but I was surprised that an author with Weir's credentials would take such liberties with the facts.  I thought it was rather tacky for her to have Elizabeth pregnant with Seymour's baby.  That just didn't sit right.  I took it for what it was…a novel.  As long as I didn't remind myself that it was written by a historian, I was okay with it.  I thought her novel, “Innocent Traitor” was much better than “The Lady Elizabeth.”  Have you read that one?  If you have, what did you think?

I agree Sharon. Innocent Traitor is much better, and I enjoyed the story more. It seemed more historical plausable than some aspects of Lady Elizabeth.

Having said that, Lady Elizabeth is a good example of historical fiction compared to some other books avaliable. I did like it for the most part, but was put off by the Elizabeth-Seymour affair/pregnancy. However, I understand that, by creating Elizabeth's pregnancy, it made for better drama, which is always necessary in historical fiction.

I agree bethany.x that by presenting the Seymour affair, it does make the reader ask 'what if,” and if it makes people want to learn more about Elizabeth, then that's great. I should note there were persistent rumours throughout Elizabeth's life that she was pregnant by Seymour, so it does appear Weir is playing up certain rumors about Elizabeth's younger life, even if there is no evidence to backup the claim.

As usual, I've gotten carried away with myself!

I definately agree that the whole Seymour affair was a little off-putting. It seemed to dishonour Elizabeth so much and I found that quite offensive. Though, the huge 'what-if' really did leave the book in my head and perhaps made it more memorable. And I think as it was historical fiction it was necessary despite how it was quite scandalous!

I do have 'Innocent Traitor' and I will read it soon, but right now I'm busy reading 'Castile for Isabella' by Jean Plaidy, which I'm really enjoying. Thanks for the recommendations. I'll tell you all what I think once I've read it- I'll read it next!

And DuchessofBrittany- I love your photo of Hatfield House! I tried to upload a picture of The Alhambra but it wouldn't work Frown
