My name's Clare and I've been posting comments on Claire's wonderful site since about November/December 2009. I post as Louise (my middle name) to avoid confusion. I have posted my first comment on the forum, which is about Weir's Lady in The Tower (Claire had to get me logged on because I'm a bit of a technophobe). I thought I'd properly introduce myself to avoid everyone thinking of me as the grumpy one who gets stressed out by historical fiction and Alison Weir.
I live in Dorset on the south coast of England, although I originally come from Birmingham, then Gloucester and then Devon before coming here in January last year. I'm a lawyer (but don't let that put you off) and I'm passionate about Tudor history, but in particular Anne and George Boleyn. I accept they had faults, and were in no way perfect, but I hate it when either of them are unjustly criticised. It does tend to make me lose a bit of perspective.
Anyway, that's me. xx

Thanks for the welcome, Duchess and Sharon. Knowing you feel the same way about Weir is like when you dislike someone you think everybody else likes. You end up feeling like a complete cow. When you know there are other people feel the same way it's such a relief.
I've read some of the posts on this forum, which are a million miles away from some of the discussion forums around. Everyone who comments here is so clued in, and more impotantly they want to learn more and more rather than just making meaningless comments without knowing what they're talking about. It's really a breath of fresh air. I don't always agree with people, just like people don't always agree with me, but that's fine. I do get grumpy over the way historical fiction often damages historical personality's reputations, and Sharon, I admit to being very grumpy over that. I think we all have bees in our bonnet, and mine are that and Weir. Claire's advice is usually to have a stiff drink, but I am slightly concerned at the risk of becoming an alcoholic, so maybe I'll post comments instead!!

Welcome to the forum Clare!
I'm in two minds about Weir; I love her writing style ( I think she has a real flair for making history come alive!) and I always enjoy her books but I take a lot of her theories with a pinch of salt. Especially in regards to backing up her sources, she's particularly bad at that! And her historical fiction leaves a lot to be desired, IMO anyway
Hope you enjoy it here, we're a pretty friendly bunch (and if you want to have a rant about historical fiction go right ahead – I may just join you!)

Hello Wreckmasterjay,
Thanks for the welcome. I think it's possible to enjoy Weir in the same way as it's possible to enjoy Gregory or Hirst i.e.. don't take it too seriously. Weir's writing can be enjoyed, but just beware of taking it as fact. Have you read Ives? That really is a book worth reading. I also love Starkey, Guy and Fraser. I've only just discovered John Guy, and I don't always agree with everything he says, but his research is very thorough and he doesn't come up with theories without backing them up. I'm currently re-reading Bernard with a clearer head than I read it the first time. Mmmm

Hi and welcome, Clare! Sorry this is a bit late, I've been on vacation for a couple weeks with Internet access (which I generally think is a good thing, just not in the case of the AB Files!). I'm also pretty opinionated, and I respect whatever you're going to say about Alison Weir (and so far I agree with it!). I'm not a huge fan because I agree with Sharon–she has a lot of guesses–and I think her books vary greatly, from fantastic to horrendous. Personally I like her Six Wives book, but that might be about it for nonfic from her. Anyway, I just wanted to say welcome and I look forward to reading your posts!

Hello Boleynfan,
Thanks for the welcome.
He he, I've never actually been called opinionated before, but I suppose I am a bit when it comes to certain things. Anyway, I already posted a vent about The Lady in the Tower. It's in the Movies and Books section, and now it's off my chest I definitely feel better!
