December 5: Jane Seymour

Today's Advent treat is another sketch by Hans Holbein the Younger, this time of Henry VIII's third wife, Jane Seymour. Holbein used this preparatory sketch for his famous painting of Jane that you also see here. Again, it's done in chalk. I love the eyes, they seem so real. And I'm always amazed by the detail in the painting - you can see the pinheads in Jane's placard (going down on the right-hand side of her bodice). If you got to THIS LINK you can zoom in.
