Yeah i am typically putting my feet in my mouth, chewing them then swallowig them…i have a bit of a habit of saying inappropriate things, usually very crass things, as you all know lol, i am just lucky i am surrounded with people with a sense of humour….i think that’s what you have to do with this Claire, just laugh about it, think about how wrong they are and how little they know you, and how very sad it is that they felt they had to make a point of contacting you in order to berrate you about saying something you never said. Then put on your best Tudor costume, and do the nutbush in your loungeroom! (hope you guys know what ‘nutbush’ is, just fill u in incase, Tina Turner..)

I can see why me saying “really sad” could be taken as offensive, out of context, but it is clear what I mean if the article is read as a whole and it is definitely a case of someone wanting to read too much into it.

Absolutely, it’s obvious they wanted to pick a single statement out of the article to try and quote you out of context. The problem is with popular media perpetuating myths about historical figures some people may see a certain person portrayed in a certain way, and identify with it. If then the representation is disproved by actual fact then they may have a hard time letting go of their idea of it. Of course the internet also presents another problem of narky people hiding behind their keyboards.

I’ll give you an example, I was gutted when I found out Anne of Cleves was interested in pursuing marriage with Henry again after he executed Catherine. Not because I identified with her in that particular instance but because I had created my own image of her where she was “the smart one that got away” and I, at the moment I read it, was disappointed. Not a logical feeling obviously, but sometimes emotions get the better of us Laugh

Sorry you’re angry, Sharon. I’ve been going from being angry to being worried then back to angry. This is the second time someone has said it, so it worried me. Someone else didn’t like my use of the words “sodomy” and “buggery” in my book but then the flippin’ act was called The Buggery Act and those were the words used in the 16th century, which is what I was referring to. I think the problem comes from looking at these people with modern eyes and with our modern values.

Ah…well then…Tash is right….they can kiss my arse too!

Well said Sharon.. I PM’d Claire with a saying I use quite a bit when people like these morons say things like this to people, so I hope she won’t mind me using it here, plus no one will take offence to it.. The saying is. Don’t let the bastards grind you down.
It really annoys me that there are so many narrow minded apathic and ill educated idiots out there who jump on someone just because they can’t be bothered to read between the lines of a statement made, or won’t except another persons opinion on a subject..
Tash don’t worry sweetheart, unlike the mindless plebs that tore a strip out of Claire, we are all educated and logical here in our approach to things, and take the time to understand each others comments., and even if we don’t agree with a comment that is being made we accept that we all have different opinions. If we all thought and acted the same it would be a very boring world.

Well said, Boleyn! My sentiments exactly. I try not to give idiots much thought or time. It’s not worth it. They enjoy living their narrow-minded, ignorant existance. We can never change them. I guess all we can do is support each other on this forum, knowing we don’t always agree, but are mature enough to enjoy a good tete-a-tete.

Either I’m incredibly old or something…but there’s a lot of people out there who really don’t understand how far as a society we have become.

I remember women being talked about for not wanting to have intercourse with their husbands, for what ever reason ” why did she marry him then? and deny him his rights”…

As a woman if you enjoyed s3x then you were …unmentional word, if you didn’t you were frigid..

men had to be skirt-chasers or were other unmentional words

If a woman was beaten up by her husband “then obviously she deserved it/provoked him”..and so on and so forth…

and this is far less than 30 years ago..even less than 20 years..

That we can discuss if a historical character may have been g@y have found proof she/he almost certainly wasn’t shows how we have evolved into looking at human sex@ulity.

this is an intereasting read re h0mosexuality in 16th C(http://queryblog.tudorhistory……ty-in.html).

It's always bunnies.

No Anyanka you aren’t old, you are an enlightened human being. As you rightly say the word Sex and homosexuality up until the late 80’s is something you simply didn’t mention or talk openly about. My sister is still like that if you mention the word Sex or anything else that involves anything to do with woman’s issues, she goes red and speaks about it in whispers and silly giggling, if that makes sence.
She went up the wall, hit the roof and went down the other side when my Nephew came out and told her he was Gay. As a result he became very withdrawn and unhappy as she was forever nagging at him to stop being silly and to settle down and find a nice girl, she even went as far to set him up on dates with girls she felt were suitable and wife/mother material. Grrr in the end we had to have words…

My attitute towards my nephew’s admission about being Gay was very different as we are very close. The silly bugger thought that because I’d got 2 children I would do a Pauline (sister) and forbid him to ever see the children again. Pauline had told him I found out later that if he told me he was Gay, she would tell me to never allow him near the kids, because.. I’ll let you figure it out. Needless to say Pauline and I had words had words again. All I said was “So? You haven’t grown 2 heads and gone septic, you are still Darren what difference does it make that you are Gay?” “I love you for who and what you are and now I’ve got someone else to love too”and I do I’m very proud of both of them. They have recently had a civil partnership/wedding too and I was very proud and honoured to be there, I blubbed too.

My Sister did go but it took me a lot of persuading to make her go, she had a face as black as thunder and refused point blank to have her photo taken with them or attend the reception.

Me I couldn’t care less he’s happy and that’s all that matters to me. Phil his partner is a lovely guy, and when we all get together, (which isn’t often due to the distance we live) we have a lot of fun.

There are still a lot of sexual hang up’s that are around today but for the most part the world have moved on and enlightened individuals like all of us here are able to talk openly and honestly about all sorts of issues not just on matters like this topic.

I think it was Sharon who said that when she was born due to her spinal problem the doctor’s told her parents to simply walk away and forget about her, in short throw her in the bin, and her parents basically stuck to fingers up at the Doctor and today we have a very intelligent good hearted strong dependable lady to talk to on here. If Sharon’s parents had thrown in the bin, we wouldn’t ever know her and that would be a great shame.

There are however people who think they are enlightened and intelligent, and yes talk openly like we all do here, but can be very narrow minded too, and the abuse that Claire has suffered recently proves that. These people are morons and simply beneath contempt, if they cannot except another person’s opinion and respect it then they belong to an era that has long gone. Life is far too short to worry about people like this and there are so many people especially here that can see the wood for the trees and except the views and opinions that we offer and will have freindly debate with each other without degenerating our opinions into something that would happen in a schoolyard. In short they think they are Adults, when in fact they are pre pubesant children, who jump down the throat of someone if they breathe in the wrong direction..
I hope that makes sence to you all here..

Boleyn what a wonderful story youve shared about your nephew. It is so great he has people in his family who still love him and support him, his mum needs a slap to the face if you ask me. The majority of my closest friends are gay, and i consider myself lucky to have them as friends, they are all lovely guys, and beautiful in every way. I am particularly proud of my friend Damien. He has done his Phd in psychology, has 3 adopted boys, and is a known gay activist, he lectures all over the world, and the australian goverment liase with him about making new laws and doing studies on gay people and their families, all in view of equality. I am so proud of him and the difference he is making! My other friend Andrew i have known since i was ten years old, and he and his other half ben have been together for 15 years! OMG i just did the math in my head, that’s pretty impressive for any couple if you ask me! They are the sweetest boys in the world and my life would have been poor indeed if i didnt have them…..
Thankyou so much to all of you, i have such a great time here, i say some pretty way out stuff and everyone is nice about it, and thanks Claire for this site, it rocks! Kisses to you all xoxo

Yep I agree Claire did a brilliant thing setting up this site. I love each and every member here, and strange as this is going to sound I feel like I’ve known everyone here for years.

I must say I feel the same. It is nice to have a community of sorts to come to, and feel like you actually belong some place. Smile

I can appreciate Boleyn’s story about her nephew, and Tash’s about her friend. I have a good friend who is gay. I’ve always adored him, since he’s a lovely guy. But where I live is not the most accustomed to being open to anything outside old-fashioned Victorian ideals. He chose to leave and has since found a partner and made a happy, secure life for himself. Perhaps someday we can live in a world without prejudice.

This isn’t just about George Boleyn’s sexuality. It’s indicative of a wider bias. Claire gets bashed for pointing out the inaccuracies of fiction and people like Weir. Some people would rather believe the fiction than accept that their heros such as Gregory, Mantel and Weir are fallable. They hate the Anne Boleyn Files because it forces them to face up to the truth, a truth they can’t face because it flies in the face of what they have come to accept through their limited incursion into history. Rather than see a different side to their pre-conceptions it’s easier to criticise Claire. It Claire points out the truth, and more importantly the inaccuracies of Weir and fiction, it’s not seen by some as a refreshing relatity check, it’s seen as bashng other authors. The whole thing makes me sick.
My faith in human nature, and human intelligence, is sorely tested by some peoples attitude to Claire and this site.

I was talking to a gay friend about this, and his reaction was “that’s ridiculous. There were plenty of gay guys around without having to invent some. Why can’t they let George be straight?”

Thank you for the comments re this site and also the supportive comments about me personally.

Louise is right, I’m bashed on a regular (sometimes daily it seems) basis for my work and I just don’t get it. I don’t feel that I bash authors, I just don’t agree with them, but there are obviously some who just hate me! There are also some people who look down on me because I’m a blogger, not an academic. Oh well. All I can do is be true to myself and the story of the people I write about.

Going back to homosexuality. As a mother, I find Boleyn’s sister’s reaction shocking. I cannot think of anything that my children could do that would make me feel like that and act like that. Whatever her views on homosexuality, surely she could have put love first and just ‘got over it’ for the sake of her son. Parental love and support should be unconditional, in my opinion. It must have been hard for her when she’d obviously built up a picture of her son’s future in her mind, but still…

There is a 10 year age gap between me and my sister, so that kind of tells you just how far we have come with our attitudes towards Homosexuality and Homosexual relationships.
I love my sister dearly, but there are times when I could quite cheerfully strangle her..

The internet is not the best place to try and restore one’s faith in humanity. Unless you look at those websites with the funny pictures of cats. I recommend them, they’re very soothing Laugh

Bo and Claire, I am still firmly convinced I am either adopted or the stork dropped me off. I am amazed I am related to anyone in my family, you couldn’t find five more different personalities.

I, too, believe I was swopped at birth (or is that dropped at birth)? Anyway, I think my real parents were extremely rich. I was destined for a silver spoon in my mouth. This plastic one really makes my gums itch.Laugh
Olga, if you like cats look up ‘Simon’s Cat’. The short cartoons are so funny.

I think the same could be said of every family.. Me and my brother are so different in looks and temperment that you would never believe we were brother and sister. He’s tall and muscular with a well organised mind. Whereas I’m short and dumpy and at times scatterbrained.
My sister on the otherhand is very much Victorian in her attitude towards life in general, she got a good heart however and never bears a grudge against any who have hurt her. As she says life is to short to bear grudges..
