Do you know any Tudor Recipes? If so, please share them.

Here is a recipe for Maid of Honour Cakes:-

Maids of honour cakes ingredients:

1/2     pint     Milk
2     tbsp.     Bread crumbs
4     oz.     butter
2     oz.     Almonds, Ground
1     oz.     Sugar
3         Eggs
1         Lemon Zest (the grated rind of one lemon)
        Puff paste

Maids of honour cakes preparation:

1. Add the butter, almonds, and sugar.
2. Beat in the eggs, one at a time.
3. Put a dessert spoonful of the mixture in the center of the pastry of the pastry, and bake until golden brown.

Various websites have recipes for them – see http://www.azcakerecipes.com/m…..e-3710.htm, http://www.greenchronicle.com/….._cakes.htm, and http://www.tafn.org.uk/kitchen….._of_honour.

You can read the history of these cakes/tarts at http://www.richmond.gov.uk/loc…..honour.pdf

“Legend has it that the recipe was locked away in an iron chest until it was rediscovered by Henry VIII who presented it to Anne Boleyn, lady-in-waiting to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. She is believed to have made the tarts for Henry who, in turn, named them ‘Maids of Honour’ after her. Another story has it that Henry came across Anne and other attendants eating the cakes from a
silver dish and, after tasting them, was so delighted that the recipe was kept secret and locked in an iron box in Richmond Palace. Yet a third version claims that, in order to protect the secret, the unfortunate ‘maid’ who invented the tarts was imprisoned within the Palace grounds and ordered to produce the pastries solely for Henry and the Royal Household.”

I love the 3rd of those legends about the discovery of the recipe (I know we discussed this before, Claire, didn't we elsewhere?) because it is such a wonderful example of 'do you want the good news first?' kind of story.

\”The good news is that the king simply adores your recipe for the tarts. The bad news is that you are going to be imprisoned for the rest of your life and have to continue making them forever!\”

Was it on Facebook? I think you found a video from littlemisssunnydale on YouTube. I can't remember, but yes, I love the story. I haven't yet got round to making them but will do soon because they sound yummy.

One story is that they came to light during Elizabeth's reign. I guess we'll never know but I love legends!

Just had a look on YouTube and it was littlemisssunnydale's video on Richmond – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..gRKMKr7P-Q – thanks Rochie and thanks littlemisssunnydale!

Hi Gwenne,

Thanks for all those links, I've just edited them so that they open in a new window so that you can still get to the other ones.

I know the Henry's diet one – it really does explain how Henry got so obese but makes me surprised that his heart didn't pack up much earlier!! I'll have to check out the other ones, thanks so much for those.

Here are some recipes with video tutorials! Not only do they have recipes from Tudor times, but of many points in history. I found it very useful and hope you do too.
