We all accept that Anne had dark hair. Most people seem to be described as having various shades of brown with red tints to different degrees etc so how frequently did anyone have blonde hair. Do we know of any characters from the time who were blonde? Are there any mentions of blondes in the letters and stories of the time? I know some people are described as ‘fair’ which to us could mean blonde but Anne herself is described as fair somewhere so I presume the meaning of the word was more along the lines of comely/attractive/pretty than as a reference to colouring.
I think the Saxons were a fair (as in blonde) race but few people after them seem to have been.

I believe Jane Grey and her sisters were all blondes. Jane Seymour was supposedly blonde, but since many women wore English hoods, I guess it was quite hard to tell. The Anglo-saxons were blonde, but the Celts were not (naturally) and when they bred with the Saxons, the darker hair colours were dominant. The Vikings also tended to be brown/red haired, but like the Celts used lime (sp?) to bleach their hair. Elizabeth supposedly had strawberry blonde hair naturally, with a reddish hue rather than ginger. I’m fully Scottish by blood and my hair is black, as is many of my family members hair.

Dr. J. Stephan Edwards believes that this is a portrait of Jane Grey:

There’s a written description of Jane as a redhead: “The eyebrows are arched and darker than her hair, which is nearly red. Her eyes are sparkling and reddish brown in colour. I stood so near her grace that I noticed her colour was good but freckled,” but Leanda de Lisle has questioned the authenticity of this description.
There’s a portrait of Mary Grey in the Wikipedia article about her (I’m not vouching for the accuracy of the article, which I haven’t read, but the portrait itself is generally identified as being one of Mary).

The only problem I have with that article is the fact that he takes Elizabeth’s eye colour into high account, and decides they were blue, then they were brown. Nearly red could also mean strawberry blonde.

I’m pretty 100% sure Jane Seymour had blonde, she was described as the opposite of Anne Boleyn and we all know Anne had brown and plus didn’t Edward have blonde hair? Henry VIII had bright red so i’m assuming Edward got his coloring from his mother.
I really wish things back then were documented better, even if the subject is hair or not. Like the debate with Jane Grey and whether she had red or blonde hair…?
• Grumble all you like, this is how it’s going to be.

I agree, I think Jane Seymour was blonde too. She looked a lot like her brother, Edward.
