I remember reading somewhere that a couple of days after his wedding day, Henry VIII saw a couple of her maids and said that he would have married them, or something along the lines of, very soon after his wedding, him saying he would have married a prettier woman. I know I’ve seen this in a couple of places but it sounds a bit more like ‘legend’ to me, and I’m wondering if there are any primary sources to back up this rumor? I would find that just so interesting.
Thank you!

Henry I think hoped that Jane would get pregnant straight away after they were married, after all both COA and Anne got pregnant (Anne was pregnant when they were married) very quickly and a child was born or in COA case miscarriage within the first year of their marriages with him.
Jane however despite the fact he was still fairly active sexually at this point, couldn’t understand why Jane wasn’t pregnant, and doubts began to fester within his mind that perhaps he may have married a woman who was barren. Bear in mind it was always the woman who was a fault if children didn’t appear, the thought that a man could be the one firing blanks was proposterous. Henry may have said it (if he said it at all) as a way of warning Jane if you don’t hurry up and get pregnant I’ll find someone who can, and pack you off to a nunnery.
Henry was a desperate man he needed a son and pretty damn quickly, the world was still reeling from the upevel he had caused by getting rid of one wife and chopping the other one up, as well as completely destroying the churches and the whole fabric of religion too. He needed a son to prove to the world that he was justified in doing what he had done. Jane had better come up with goods, or else sort of thing.

This comes from Chapuys. He wrote it in a letter dated July 1, 1536 to Granvelle and it appears in Letters and Papers. Chapuys is telling Granvelle that Jane’s coronation is being postponed til Michaelmus. He writes:
“Suspicious persons think it is to see if she shall be with child, and if not, and there is danger of her being barren, occasion may be found to take another. I am told on good authority that this king will not have the prize of those who do not repent in marriage; for within eight days after publication of his marriage, having twice met two beautiful young ladies, he said and showed himself somewhat sorry that he had not seen them before he was married.”
Chapuys gossip. He always had gossip on good authority.

I rather think that Chapuys enjoyed being a bullshit artist for his master. Am I right in thinking Sharon that it was Chapuys that started the rumour of Anne miscarrying of a deformed child in Jan 1536? and that he was the one who also put out the rumour that poor Jane had to be given a ceaser section with Eddy?
Chapuys I feel enjoyed pulling the wool over his master’s eyes, I guess it was his way of making sure he stayed in the job.

Actually Boleyn, Chapuys did not claim the child was deformed. He is not the culprit in this case. He said in a letter to Granvelle on Feb. 24th, ’36, “On the day of the interment the Concubine had an abortion which seemed to be a male child which she had not borne 3½ months, at which the King has shown great distress.”
The comments of the fetus being deformed came from Nicolas Sander 40 years later during Elizabeth’s reign. There had never been mention of a deformed fetus at the time of the miscarriage or during the rest of Henry’s reign. Nor was there mention of it during Edward’s reign and/or Mary’s reign.

As to the rumor of Jane having a caesarean, Sander is responsible for making it more than it was. Her labor lasted 2 days, and three nights. Sander stated that the child was cut from her. Sander went even further and claimed that Henry was asked which life should be saved and he replied the boy’s because he could easily provide himself with other wives. There is no evidence to support a caesarean took place. Again, Sander writing years later.
Chapuys makes me roll my eyes to heaven a lot, but he certainly keeps us going back to him for information. However, I do like your definition of him. Wink

I knew someone was responsible for the rumours I somehow thought it might of been Chapuys. I just get the impression that he would say something like that.
One has to question though why Sander would say such things? especially since he might not have been born or a very young child at the time so where would he have got such mad ideas from? ……………………wait a sec I’ve got it.. he’s was SWMNBN in previous incarnation. she writes crazy fantasy novels too..

HaHa!
Sander was a Catholic exile during Elizabeth’s reign. His info came from other Catholics. Of course, he would be reporting only the ugly rumors of Anne and Henry in order to discredit Elizabeth. The only Tudor who would have pleased Sander would have been Mary.

I always get the feeling Henry wanted what he couldn’t have..H7 didn’t want Henry to marry KOA..so Henry married KOA..

Anne didn’t want to marry Henry so H8 persuded her until Anne had no other option. And they married.

Henry decided he wanted Jane and she played the same game..Henry ,again, was blinded by love or lust? persuded Jane to wait until Anne was dead and he could claim his new toy…

Then..and it doesn’t surprise me that Henry suddenly discovered there were other women out there..prettier ones..ones that had better familiarial links..may have been “easier” sexually..

It's always bunnies.

You might be right there Anyanka. Henry liked the thrill of the chase really but once he’s got his prey he got bored with it.
Micheal Hordern who played Thomas Boleyn in the film Anne of a thousand days said “What his majesty is denied he goes crazy for, what he is given freely he despises. or something like that anyway. But it does happen to be true.
Henry was the typical spoilt brat of the era. He wanted something and would kick his feet, sulk, flounce about, and throw money at it all in order to get what he wanted, once he’s got it he didn’t want it anymore.
