Has anyone else read this yet? (I’m not sure if it is available outside of the UK yet) It’s a new historical fiction book which is supposed to answer the question of how Henry VIII turned from the handsome well-loved youth to the tyrant he later became.

Apparently it is actually intended for teenage readers which I was unaware of when I bought it. I still thought it was a good read though. The only problem was pacing – the entire first half of the book deals with Henry’s childhood and youth (which is great because that is not so often written about), but then that means that the remaining five wives and the whole rest of his life is squeezed into the second half and comes across as rather rushed! For example, the dissolution of the monasteries isn’t mentioned at all, and his relationship with Anne Boleyn is skirted over pretty quickly (considering what a major part of his life it was).

It is beautifully written though with some lovely descriptions. One of those books where you really feel that you are THERE in the room with them all, as if you have travelled back in time. 🙂 I would definitely recommend it for Tudor fans.

Yay! Books Books Books! LOL I literally have a two paged list of books I need to read and this is added. I've only actually read 1 book that is completely about Henry VIII, I usually jump for Anne Boleyn or Elizabeth or the six wives.

Hi Mya-Elise 🙂

Yes, I am the same as you, I normally go for books about Anne, Elizabeth or the wives over Henry. It did make a refreshing change reading a book written from Henry's point of view, especially one that put so much emphasis on his childhood and youth before he turned into the 'monster' of his later years.

I hope you enjoy it!

MistressAnne,

Have you read “The Virtuous Prince,” by David Starkey?  It is a non-fiction account of Henry's youth.  You might enjoy it.

I haven't read VII, but it is now on my wishlist.  I had pretty much whittled down my list at Christmas. Received a bunch of gift certificates, along with some books. The new list is starting to look like the old one…long…and it's only January!

No, I haven't read that one yet! Thanks for telling me about it. I'll add it to my wishlist (which like yours is already mega-long, even after Christmas!!)

This sounds like an interesting read. It will go on my wishlist.

I concur with Sharon: check out Starkey's Virtuous Prince. It is brillant!

It stops impulse buying…that's the only good thing I've come across having no good bookshop access….

I saw this in a bookshop today, thought about it, but because it was in the YA section, decided against it.  Might have to go back  Laugh
