We just watched this a couple of days ago, I had a hard time getting a copy so I was really looking forward to it. I quite enjoyed it although I found it really sympathetic towards Henry which kind of surprised me. They also rushed through his last three wives and i was pretty appalled at the depiction of AOC (although I suppose that shouldn’t surprise me)
has anyone else seen it and what did you think?

Oh the TV series?
I haven’t alot of it, just clips on youtube of Helena as Anne and Emily Blunt as Katherine Howard. I wanna watch it but I doubt my local library has a copy and niether does movie stores but I could still try.

i watched this when it first came on TV years ago, I don’t remember much about it except not liking the costumes Helena Bonham Carter wore much. I recall the second part was better, Emily Blunt as Katherine Howard wasn’t too bad. Man, I think I might just have to watch it again!

I had to buy one from the UK Mya, I couldn’t find it anywhere. And now I just clicked who Emily Blunt was in it, she looks so young!
I have to admit I was very impressed the lady who played KOA had almost reddish hair. And Ray looked very good, they even let him get fat.

I liked this series. I know some people were put off by Winstone’s portrayal of Henry, but I found him to bring a rougher Henry to life. He has great presence on screen, and that created a Henry with power and position. He seemed to suck up the air in a room when he enters.

I did find the second part of the series was rushed, which was a shame. Emily Blunt as KH was amazing. I felt this was a more sympathetic portrayal of her.

I liked Helena Bonham Carter as Anne. Some of her outfits were ugly and unattractive, but her portrayal of Anne was great. She brought a youth and innocence to Anne, coupled with great intellect and ambition.

It has been awhile since I’ve watched this show. I may have to watch again sometime soon!

My only problem is with Ray Winstone is that he seemed to be trying too hard, acting wise. Like he made himself seem very animated or something. ?

We ordered it from Netflix. It comes in a 2 disc set. You only get one disc at a time. We watched disc one over the weekend. Eh! It was okay. When I saw Henry crying when Anne was found guilty, I wanted to throw something, but we just got this TV. Smile
I can’t make up my mind as to whether I liked Ray Winstone or not. He sort of fit the bill physically.
There were an awful lot of scenes with him on horseback? Everytime something happened, he was riding through the woods. I think I was supposed to be impressed. I did like Helena. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of it this weekend.

The only thing that put me off RW playing Henry was the fact I half expected him to say something like, “send the boys round to sort him out”. I like RW but to me he played Henry like a cockney gangster. Perhaps that was a good thing, I don’t know?

Neil,
He did say that didn’t he? Wink I first saw him in the movie “King Arthur” starring Clive Owen. Love that movie. I thought he was great as Arthur’s sidekick, Bors. He was a brawling warrior and he was very good. He rode a horse better, too.

Sharon,
I love that film as well. I always remember RW riding his horse into a skirmish and uttering the phrase, “got a problem?”. Classic RW.

Really …I thought she was very cold faced and old to look at. Her acting at times looked like she was in one of Tim Burton’s movies. ….

Wouldn’t it have been fun to have HBC as the portrait of Anne in Hogwarts….

It's always bunnies.

This is simply my opinion. I liked HBC, but I know many don’t.

As for the reference to Hogwarts: the cultural reference is lost on me. I know it’s something about Harry Potter, but that’s all.

In the movies, there’s a portrait of Anne in the great stairway. HBC played the evil witch Bellatrix Lestrange in the Potter movies. Not that I think Anne was a witch, good or evil.

It's always bunnies.

I never ever noticed Anne’s portrait in Harry Potter until someone made a still of it and pointed it out. I guess if you were to look up the word ‘Witch’ then Anne’s name would come up somewhere. I don’t think anyone ment any harm though.

I think Henry was a pretty “animated” sort of person Mya. Despite his “unrefined” (as Duchess put it in another thread) portrayal of Henry, I really liked him.
Anne was in her thirties when she was executed wasn’t she? I don’t think Helena looked too old. The only thing I hated was AOC. What was with the teeth?

HBC is was in her late 30’s ( born 1966, H8 filmed 2003) As HBC’s peergroup it stuck me as odd that she played some-one soo much younger when her eyes especially had all the signs of a much older woman than a young Anne…my opinon only of course..

It's always bunnies.

I don’t know, I just think Winstone over did it a little bit. He wasn’t bad just….I don’t know.
