In “The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn” Eric Ives mentions that Queen Claude’s appearance “bordered on deformity”. I couldn’t find any mention of her appearance being odd online and the portrait of her by Jean Clouet appears normal to me. Can anyone explain? Thanks!

In her 1907 book, "Five Famous French Women", Millicent Garrett Fawcett describes the birth of Claude: "the child was from her birth delicate, plain and lame", taking after her mother who Brantome described as having one foot shorter than the other in his book "Illustrious Dames of the Court of the Valois Kings". I think that what was what Ives was referring to.
