Brass Rubbings
Anne Boleyn Brass Rubbing
This brass rubbing is made from a brass of Anne Boleyn from Westminster Abbey Brass Rubbing Centre which closed down in the 1990s. Fortunately, Kris was able to purchase the brass so we can now offer these lovely rubbings.
The Anne Boleyn brass rubbing measures approximately 10 by 17 inches. It has been made with gold heelball on black paper produced specifically for brass rubbing and will arrive ready for mounting and framing.
Monumental brasses were produced between 1000 – 1650 AD as a commemoration to the dead, or as a special church related event.
Today, only approximately 8,000 monumental brasses are left. Because the metal and enamel used to create these monuments were such precious commodities, many were destroyed and melted down to create armament. In addition, many of the brasses were destroyed during the various religious uprisings in Great Britain and the continent.
Brass rubbings are done by stretching a linen rag paper over the deeply etched monumental brass that is usually found at the gravesite. After securing the paper, heelball (a very hard wax) is rubbed vigorously over the paper surface to get an exact copy of the brass plate. A single rubbing can take from 2 hours to 2 days to complete depending on its size, condition and complexity.
The brass rubbing is shipped by standard first class or standard international first class.

Lady Katherine Howard Brass Rubbing
This rubbing is of Lady Katherine Howard d. 1535. Lady Howard was the aunt to Queen Anne Boleyn, the ill fated second wife of Henry VIII.
Lady Howard is depicted wearing a heraldic mantle, a form of dress for which there seems to be no evidence in real life, but which afforded an opportunity for identifying women of gentle birth in art. It carries the coat of arms of both she and her husband. At her feet is a squirrel. This is an unusual animal to be seen in brasses. However it could be explained by the fact that during the Middle Ages, they were kept as pets. The Lady Howard rubbing measures approximately 15 by 35 inches. It has been made with gold heelball on black paper produced specifically for brass rubbing and will arrive ready for mounting and framing.
This brass rubbing is made from a reproduction brass from Westminster Abbey. It is identical to the original brass in every way except size.
